Hi! I’m Devin Freeman,
a photographer and visual designer based in Syracuse, New York, studying Multimedia Photography and Design at Syracuse University's Newhouse School. My work centers on visual storytelling, using photography and design to document people, places, experiences, and details that often go unnoticed.
I have 5 years of experience in sports photography, telling a story through action shots of the game and detail shots of the quiet moments in between. My experience photographing athletics has taught me to be both observant and adaptable, anticipating moments before they happen while finding ways to tell a larger story through individual images.
At the same time, I have a deep love for documentary and travel photography. I’m drawn to photographing everyday life, unfamiliar environments, and the stories that seem to find their way into our everyday lives. Traveling has especially shaped the way I photograph, encouraging me to slow down, observe my surroundings, and find stories in places that are new to me.
My work in graphic design allows me to approach visual communication from a different perspective. Through sports graphics and design projects, I’ve explored typography, composition, color, visual identity, and the ways different elements can work together to communicate an idea. I enjoy the balance between creativity and problem-solving that design requires, finding a visual solution that is not only aesthetically engaging but also purposeful.
Across both photography and design, I focus on creating work that's intentional. I pay close attention to composition, color, contrast, and the small details that shape how an audience experiences an image.
I’m continuing to develop my visual language through my education, professional experience, travel, and personal projects. My goal is to keep exploring different forms of visual communication while building work that is interesting to be while being capable of telling a story on its own.
Outside of photography and design, I’m a naturally curious person who enjoys exploring different interests and finding new experiences. Traveling is a big part of my life, and I especially enjoy visiting places where I can experience a culture that is different from my own. I’m interested in the small details of everyday life when I travel: the way people move through a city, the food they eat, the public transportation they use, the architecture around them, and the routines that make a place feel unique. My time in Japan in particular has deepened my appreciation for travel and given me a stronger interest in Japanese culture, cities, music, food, and everyday life. I enjoy exploring without always having a specific destination in mind and seeing what I can discover along the way.
When I’m not traveling or working on creative projects, I spend a lot of my time with the hobbies and interests I’ve had for years. I’ve always been interested in anime, video games, music, and hockey, and each has become a different way for me to relax and stay connected to things I enjoy. Music is a constant in my life, and I’m always looking for new artists and songs to add to what I listen to. I also enjoy collecting small physical reminders of places and experiences, whether that’s a souvenir, a ticket, or a CD from my favorite band. A lot of these interests might seem separate from my creative work, but they all come from the same part of my personality.
Thanks for stopping by.
Thanks for taking the time to look through my work and get to know a little bit about me. Whether you’re here because of a photograph, a design, or simply curiosity, I hope you found something that stayed with you.
